Man, 70, causes elderly man, 90, to fall & die during struggle at void deck, gets 28 months jail The two did not know each other prior to the incident. A 70-year-old man grabbed a 90-year-old man's cane and pushed him to the ground after he was falsely accused of owing money. The incident occurred at the void deck of Block 3 Marsiling Road. 90-year-old Zhu Zhennan (transliteration), who suffered from dementia, was sent conscious to the hospital where he died that night. The 70-year-old, Zhuo Decai (transliteration), pleaded guilty to one count of voluntarily causing grievous hurt and was sentenced to 28 months' jail on Feb. 13. The two, both retirees living alone, did not know each other prior to the incident, according to ShinMin Daily News. What happened At 11:19am on Oct. 15, 2023, Zhu walked to a bench in the HDB void deck and sat down. The elderly man had difficulty moving and had to use a cane. Nine minutes later, Zhuo walked past Zhu, when the latter suddenly accused the former of owing him S$100. CCTV footage played in court showed the two arguing fiercely before Zhu swung his cane at Zhuo at least twice. Zhuo then grabbed Zhu's cane, before letting go of it, causing Zhu to fall backward and hit the back of his head on the ground. Zhuo stayed where he was for around 26 seconds before he left the scene. He did not attempt to help Zhu, who lay motionless on the floor. A passer-by noticed the motionless Zhu and called an ambulance soon after. When the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) arrived at the scene, Zhu could sit up and open his eyes, but could not answer questions. He also vomited several times. Zhuo returned to the crime scene ten minutes later after going to the grocery store, saw SCDF officers administering first aid to Zhu, and returned to his flat. Zhu was sent to the hospital, where he subsequently died later that night. Autopsy reports indicted the cause of death was a head injury with a skull fracture of 19 centimetres. Zhuo was arrested by police the next day after he was identified through CCTV footage. Defence: Accused was too frightened to help The prosecution had asked for 36 to 38 months of jail time for Zhuo, arguing that he was able to continue with daily activities after the incident. They added that Zhuo did not step forward to explain the situation even after seeing medical staff at the scene. Zhuo's lawyers argued that the elderly man did not take any action because he was too afraid. They also noted that Zhuo was old and only had a primary level education. Zhuo, a single child whose parents had passed away, had no one who could visit him. In addition, he had been unable to work for the past five years due to health problems. The defence pointed out that Zhuo actively cooperated with police investigations following his arrest, and pleaded guilty at an early stage, They asked for a jail sentence of 28 to 30 months.
